Time flies. 2010 is coming to an end soon.

Looking back, 2010 is our SYF year full of hard work and memories. I applaud all for your endurance and resilience having gone through the months of tough trainings and transition period. =)

It is amazing to see this batch of Sec 4s leaving SPF. This is because this is the first batch I watch you grow from Chubby Sec 1s to tougher Sec 4s. All the best, graduating members.

To band family - remember the quote from the famous inventor Thomas Edison who perfected the electric light bulb. He said "If I find 10000 ways something wont work, I havent failed. I am not discouraged because any wrong attempt discarded is yet another step forward."

So, band - we will march forward as a family to face more challenges and find the way that makes thing work. 100 plus, outdo yourself!

I believe we can do it. I am sure you feel your progress, be it how little for some of you. Most importantly, have a positive attitude and attend your band practices diligently.

When is Band Practice Resuming?

1) The numerous oral sessions in the afternoons
2) Instructorship
3) Final furnishing of band room - curtains and carpet

Basically, I would be discussing more details with CCAHOD and P, VPs next week. You would get the answer to your question soon. Be patient. =)

How's your holiday so far? Its ending soon ): Wanna rest more? Hehe. Well, no band activity at all in this holiday. Bored at home, right? Wait for announcement for band practice! Then, you all can resume band practice, play with your instrument, learn new songs, play new stuff, meet up with your band friends, etc. Sadly, I won't be there. ):

Heard that the band room is renovated or what? Lucky all of you. Treat the band room well. Our home <3.

Hello Everyone - Too much Rest during this holiday?

Dear Band,

So, you had enough rest during this holiday? I am sure most of you had. Some of you realise that without band practices, you seem to be very bored! Do you miss band practices, band friends, etc?

Usually, you start to treasure something more when you don't seem to have it with you. A late realisation. But it is better than never. =)

Anyway, I do hope that I can get something in place for you soon. But, sometimes it is not within my control totally. So, wait in anticipation for upcoming band practices, direction, plans after this holiday.

I do want to thank the core group of students who came back last Fri and this Fri to do instrument stock take + shifting everything from band to music room. Hope the room will be ready when the term starts! It is heart-warming to see that this group of students come back willingly and within a short notification. Thanks!

See you soon! Before you know it, the holidays will be over ...

Dear band,

If you are reading this, I hope this is your short study break. Recharge, then go back to study again. Dont spend too much time on the computer.

I hope that all of you are putting in 100% effort into studying for Mid year exams. To do well - is not by luck or by chance. Set a goal, aim for the goal by working hard. Remember - if you fail to prepare, you are prepared to fail. So, preparation is important. Next, just before the paper or during the paper, stay calm and have a clear focused mind. If you can do what I said, the outcome will be within your control.

Convince yourself, parents and all others that band students can do well in studies. Then nobody can comment that you waste time on CCA and flunk studies. Let yourself be the case whereby you spend time on CCA, yet juggle well with studies, yet have good grades. =)

Then, you will fulfill your basic role as a student. Parents will not stop you when band practices resume.

By the way, due to termites infesting the band room, band room and store will be under intensive renovation soon. Instruments will be locked elsewhere during the period. So, be prepared to have a brand new band room and store after June holiday. Then, we can start afresh and discuss about upcoming programs.

Any updates, I will let you know. Looks like seniors prefer ORD at end of year. So, I got no objection to keep it to end of year. Just that our UG band students will be invited back then. Hope they join us for their efforts and time spent with us. We are a family! =)

Last but not least, all the best for exams! Need my help during revision, book a slot with me or sms me.

Dear band,

It has been 1 week after SYF. How have you been? It's nice to see some of you around, greeting me politely when you walk past me. It was brought to my attention by a few subject teachers this week that some of you are

1) Still upset (as of Mon)about SYF
2) Telling parents that you stay out late this week due to band (Lie?)
3) Not putting in your best attitude or behaviour during subject lessons

With regards to this, 1 band colleague can't help but asked me on Fri "Ms Neo, why can you stay so calm after SYF results that day? I actually cried too. I feel upset for the band. Don't you feel anything?"

Well, I cried before too when I went for my own SYF. I cried too when I accompanied SPF band in 2007 Indoor (tears really dropped) and 2008 Outdoor SYF (I held back my tears). This year, I didn't. Not because I don't feel anything, but because I already understood what are the 'greater' things that you can take away other than outcome. Outcome is a bonus only.

Just ask yourself 'Have you tried your best?' If the answer is YES, you had done your part. The outcome is not something that is only determined by you - something that you should understand. It is determined by everyone else, your competitors, school support, etc.

Look forward - God gives us eyes that are positioned as such for us to LOOK FORWARD.

I got a table calendar. On April 10th, it states

"The only difference between 'happiness is nowhere' and 'happiness is now here' is not the event, but how you see the event. Perception is the key.

I know I can never make you see things the same way I see it. But if you try, you may see the things I perceive. Who knows?

Today, April 17th, it states

"A lot of happiness is overlooked because it doesnt cost anything."

So, move on. Stop giving yourself excuses for not putting in your very best in other important things such as STUDIES. I spoke to some of you, especially my sec 1s. Be consistent and never create any more troubles or excuses for you can be suspended. You know who you are. I believe in you, but you got to prove yourself worthy of praises.

Only when you know what you take away, can this learning journey be complete. No point missing band practices now as you SHOULD concentrate on studies. EXCEL in studies. Then, you can be back without parent's objection. Too many parents objected and hoped you can quit. You may not know. But a lot of your parents are my 'friends' now. Only when you can assure them that you can cope well, will they feel less worried.

Well, Mrs Tang suggested this year's ORD and SYF thanksgiving ceremony to be held in May after exam. This can be something that we look forward to. Subjected to further planning and confirmation.

For me, after SYF, I resumed focus on things that I had neglected. I took away (10) if you remember. I thank all who allowed me to be stronger, not fearful about abrupt situations or doctor's words. I started my phase 1 of heart treatment. Literally. I always see it coming. Just like how I know my band will move on for sure too after 10th April. I have not given up in everything despite there are times I wish I can. Have you? Is life just about SYF? =)

Your next focus - STUDIES - Determine the outcome by working on it. Believe strongly, with concrete actions. It works, only if you FOCUS and put in your very best with no other excuses or distraction.

Completion of Learning Journey - SYF Band 2010

Dear band,

The 'big' day was over. But the things that 'SYF 2010' had given you will never expire. Recall the 10 things I listed for you in the video, and they are also listed in my previous blog entry. List more things that this learning journey has given you.

To add on, a few students mentioned to me

- Band gives me a family I feel that I belong to
- Band gives me a sense of accomplishment that others (not in band) would probably not experience
- Band fulfills my dreams of playing music though I am from UG band

List down these things on a piece of paper, your blog, or simply counting these blessings in your heart.

I thank everyone - band, alumni, instructors, parents, teachers, P, VP, CCA HOD and anyone if I missed here - for this learning journey.

Only you yourself can make it complete if you know what you take away with you.

Counting Down - 3, 2, 1 ...

Dear Band,

Are you surprised at how near it is to THAT day? Ask yourself - why are we working so hard for? Is it for a silly day with a ? outcome? To me, when you have endured and completed the whole preparation process till the actual day when you have to stand in front of so many people to present your show, you are a winner in a way!

But always ask yourself - can you do better? 100 PLUS - Outdo yourself! Always find the goodness in every situation. But, do not compromise to be of a lower standard if you have the capabilities to be the best.

Today, 1 girl broke down as she don't feel good physically plus emotionally after being scolded. When you scold, you probably care for the band as a whole. But dont forget to care for the particular individual. Everyone is unique. Everyone's tolerance level is different. But I asked her - are you confident? She said 80%. I asked if she wanted to join us back on the field to regain the 20% that she lacks to outdo herself and makes people who scolded her praise her? She walked back to the field. This SYF preparation has sharpened her life skills and allowed her to build confidence!

What has this band SYF given me to date? A lot. So much that you wont know.

I give thanks everyday in a little book I have as my one dear student taught me to. I thank many of you in my little book for the little hiccups that we had, that made me a better person in reacting to sudden situations. It is an important practice for me to handle things in my life currently. I thank those who were unwell, went to doctor, took medication diligently as it gives me strength to know that it isnt that fearful to see the doctor and hear some cruel facts. I thank the opportunities that some created for me to just shout at you to scold you or keep you quiet as it allows me to waste some energy and don't think too much about other things. I thank all who had eaten breakfast, lunch or dinner with me as it allows me to force myself to really swallow food, talk and carry on. I thank my alumni who love my band and help in ways that you can when I cant sometimes. I thank my conductors for always telling me to take it easy and dont be so stressed though I am not really stressed by band at the back of my mind. I thank God for the good weather so that we can stay healthy and train in the sun rather than in the rain. I thank many ...

So, do you really know what have SYF given you? Ask yourself ...
1) Excuses to be lazy in other things?
2) Opportunities to be more confident?
3) Friendship or Love that can last a lifetime?
4) Darker skin colour that may stay with you?
5) Opportunity to perform like a superstar at Indoor Stadium?
6) Exercises that allow you to shed some weight?
7) Reasons to laugh heartily?
8) Reasons to cry in whatever emotions you are in?
9) Opportunities to know that nothing is impossible and you can outdo yourself?
10) Simply beyond what I can describe here?

For me, it is (10). For you?

Sports Day Performance - It's Just the Beginning .. Yet the Ending is so NEAR

Dear all,

Today, is over. Or I should say- yesterday - Sports Day 30th March 2010. I would like to especially thank these people for making it possible (even though some of them dont read this blog).

1) Tailor Grace - who loves us so much to rush the job for us
2) Shoe vendor at Beach Road - for scolding Ms Neo like a dog, yet to help in the end when we needed to do some exchanges.
3) Shoe vendor at Tampines - for giving me his hp no. and opening his shop at 0730 in the morning when 2 pairs of shoes suddenly had to be purchased on the day of performance.
4) Uniform IC Shameerul and supportive team and good friends - Sea Mei, Li Qing, Kai Jun, Marcus, Wah Guan
A BIG thank you for settling all the repairs of headgears, distribution of shoes, waterbottles, etc.

5) Alumni - who came back to help with repair of headgear. Some received my smses to be back to help.
6) Miss Liu - for helping with the repair of headgear etc.
7) Majors and SLs - for assisting in all small or big matters for respective sections.
8) Drum Major JJ - for knowing what is important and believing in yourself to determine the outcome and not vice versa.
9) Alumni Joseph - for guiding Ms Neo the direction to the clinic.
10) Mr Ghazali, Mr Andy Luo and NurZakiah for doing band duties and areas of responsibilities dutifully.
11) Band conductors - for all the guidance on the formation etc.
12) SYF BAND AND COLOURGUARDS - For trying so hard, and still trying very hard till the BIG day.
13) P, VPs, CCA HOD - who really love the band and support in ways that they can when I approach them.
14) Anybody else whom I might have missed and yet made everything possible.
15) Myself - for loving band dearly and doing something I thought is impossible. I swam and reminded myself when I saw this advertisement (100 Plus - Outdo Yourself)

Beloved Band - It's just the beginning when everyone turns up, yet the Ending is so NEAR.

This week very tiring yeah? We had 5 practices this week. Somehow I felt like day camp just ended again. I can't really remember I went to school this week except for band. LOL.

We are only left with 13 days. No time left! SLs, please always always always remind your section again and again to do things fast! Sports day. We have one more days left to Sports day. Nobody wish to embarrass ourselves infront of our school and classmates by our mistakes right? You don't think "So many people on the field, nobody can recognize me one la." YOU'RE WRONG. They can see us. Your friend will find you. They will concentrate on you then the other band members. If you got any mistakes, later they will say to you "Eh, ____, you just now go wrong way is it?"

To prevent any mistakes, SL, please call them and get ALL YOUR MEMBERS PRESENT FOR BAND PRAC TMR. UG and non-UG members, tell them, they have to be responsible. I don't have to elaborate why. Just think, what you feel when this particular UG band person don't come for band prac? You will only remember what CCA they are from.

I've been enjoying myself throughout this week's prac. I can feel more of us are putting in more effort. I love the "Nobody" part la! OMG. HAHA, so funny. To enjoy "Nobody", to be able to do it properly, shake more. To shake more, you have to throw away your "face" and take the courage to SHAKE! Tell yourself, I can't let anyone say I'm stiff. So I MUST SHAKE. Train shaking at home. HAHA.

Happy happy things. In such a big CCA like band, there bound to be unhappiness right. Just try not to agitate each other. Worst case, stay away from each other. Its less than 2 more weeks only what. Very fast over one. Just bear with it :)

Yes, its less than 2 more weeks. I can't believe that I'm going to step down soon. 3 and half years of being a band member. You know, school is boring. It only can give you memories on study, study, study, scolding and punishment, staying back, teacher nagging, classmates' nonsense. But band, the bond and friendship that through our tiring time spent together are formed, memories of us playing games, fooling around, memories of us running the field together, memories of us complaining, memories of us eating our lunch together. We can't find this kind of stuff in other places. I feel this, especially in this few weeks, that I'm glad I didn't quit band after SYF 08. I'm glad that I stayed on, to be a part of this big family. T_T I'm missing band already. HAHA.

You know, only the strongest will survive!

I'm very thankful for this blog. HAHA, because if I'm asked to say this infront of you guys, I will run out of words. I hope, the rest of the batches will keep this blog. Will continue updating. Leaders after leaders. Especially my assistant band majors. They only post in this blog less than 5 times. And its all about reporting time, that I force them to post. -.-
Imagine, after 20 years, if Springfield still exist, and band still exist, and on a random day you come and visit this blog, see what the current SPF band is doing, and then click on the history, and read all this stuff again. The feeling is weird, like "I DID THAT IN THE PAST?!" If I'm asked to read this 10 years later, I think I will feel weird. HAHA, like asking myself "I typed that?!" And don't change this blog URL. Because, not only band members visit this blog, seniors, alumnus, teachers, schoolmates, visit this blog too.

FOR THE 13 DAYS LEFT, LETS ALL DO OUR BEST.

Prove those people that look down on us, and feel that we can't achieve anything WRONG. Prove them. Believe in ourselves that we, one day, could tell them in their face "AH HA~ See, we did it! To tell others, we did it. :) So, keep on fighting, we can all do it :) Because?

My dear juniors,
Months of practices, Days of endurement. How are you guys doing? Tired isn't it? We, as alumni, do not want to see you guys exhausted. so, HAVE GOOD REST. and, the reason we are so harsh on you guys, not because we want to torture you guys. but, the date is nearing. Time is not in our control. We love the band. Thats the reason We are going back. You think we have this kick of scolding people or being sacastic or whatsoever you people call it, you're so wrong. We wanna support all of you, that pillar of support when you are tired. We wanna be that source of encouragement to you people. We wanna be there when you are tired, happy or even when you cry tears of joy after SYF. We love this band, We love the people inside as well. We know all of you are really tired. So are WE. We are tired as well. We are tired of nagging too. YOU'RE really not alone. We know you might not understand this yet, but ask yourself why the seniors actually bother going back. We love you and we want you to grow. Nothing stops us from seeing you guys grow into a person so inspiring in the future. We really wish you all the best for SYF. Sometimes it just hurts. Sometimes, maybe we unknowingly compare you with the pass batches, for that we apologise. We really really hope you'll understand. Seriously. Life have not been that easy for us as well.. JIAYOU JIAYOU! We believe in all of you! You can do this! :D

Just FOCUS, DO it!

Dear all,

Just FOCUS, DO it! We are so close to the big day, yet it feels so far. I was looking at you today from level 2 till you ended, if you didnt know. The attendance did not seem as good. =(
I chose not to speak to you today as I was not in my own motivated top form. I know I do not have the inner strength to encourage all today, as I wasnt able to even encourage myself these few days. My heart seems to stop beating for 2nd time of the year. Really.

Same thing goes for you. Sometimes, you will feel down, lost, discouraged. Do not show it out and influence the people around you. There will be a spiral effect that causes all to feel down. I have rested, and gathered my inner strength with the help of my loved ones. You can do it too. When you feel like giving up, talk to people - people who are more experienced (seniors) and people who can understand you. Get your loved ones (friends and family) to inject you with enthusiasm. But most importantly, after that, you got to pick yourself up and move on! I did, so I believe you can too!

Life goes on regardless of how you feel for SYF - nervous, scared, numb, excited, happy. Aim, FOCUS, score!

I will be there to encourage you in the afternoon tomorrow. Literally. I bought 10 large Pizza Hut pizzas for those who make an effort to come back on Sat to train hard. Pamper yourself. You truly deserve it, if you had done your best. If not, you better work harder after eating my pizzas. =)

meaning, you don't just say or comment about the band. you need to do something to improve the band. someone must take the trouble to tell the members.

like what Janice said, you cannot depend on majors. although majors is the first one to step forward. the majors try to talk to the members but most of them do not have interest in band.

HOW?

although our performance is good, it is still not enough attain silver or gold! Now, you guys just putting in 70% effort, how about the other 30%?

you guys are the juniors and you guys have no right to scold or to say vulgarities to your senior.

yes, they are your friend but in band, they are your senior and DO NOT DISRESPECT THEM!!

Dear band,

This is Miss Neo. How do you feel when SYF is nearing? I feel for you, that is why even when I am not 'on duty', I will try my best to be with you to know how you are. Feeling tired, nervous, scared, drained, excited, happy, worried?

Remember this: You need to keep yourself healthy, especially when you are so busy with studies, band practices, and some are even involved in Speech Day Parade or other hubs. Sometimes, nobody knows or realises how busy you are. Only yourself, or probably I sometimes notice. I will try my best to help you. But, you must learn to prioritise. Reject invitation by other hubs etc, if you know you are already involved at Parade etc.

I know some of you are concerned that the new instruments have not arrived. You are worried if you can adapt to it. I am sorry to say that due to shipment etc, they will arrive earliest in 2 weeks' time from now. Do not worry too much, as the new instruments are supposed to be better to play. Also, as seniors, try to encourage and motivate juniors and own peers who are showing signs of giving up. Don't give up, because we are so close to the BIG day. Hang in there, we will all make it through!

Look forwards to the BIG day. Gear up, right now! Put in your very best so that you have no regrets. Never say how sorry you are only after something happens. Stop skipping band and give excuses to yourself that it is ok, 1-2 times only. Believe in everyone, try all you can, put in your VERY BEST EFFORTS. We are all in it together.

For Mar holiday day camps, it is going to be one final rare chance to practise really hard. Turn up punctually! Leaders are planning bonding games etc to bond the sec1s and the rest. Think about it - leaders are so busy, yet they plan for you. So, how can you let them down?

It is going to be over really soon, as it is left with about just ONE month. How do you want this learning process to end? It all depends on YOU! To be able to hold your head up high, or to sigh and say 'if only' I have practised harder .... it's your choice. After the BIG day, Sec 1-3s will stop and have a very good break from CCA till Semester 2 July. Sec 4-5s will study really hard to prepare for the national exams. We will miss one another dearly then, if you don't feel it now. Trust me. Create this valuable experience of 'being together through thick and thin' from now till the BIG day.

On a brighter note, this year SYF is at Indoor Stadium. It will not be as scary as the super big Outdoor Stadium. Adapt as much as you can at the venue when we go for rehearsal on 23rd Mar 2010. It is our one and only rehearsal day. DON'T MISS IT!

Stop all complaints. Complaints bring people down. Motivate one another now. It's now or never ...

Study hard my dears. Manage band and studies well. We're left with around 1 month plus. The feeling on the stadium field and on the school's field is totally different. The stadium's field makes you feel small, feel so vulnerable. But you know, you turn left and right, your lovely buddies are beside you. On the actual day, before you know what is really happening, everything ended already. The scoldings, the running, the punishment. Then you won't see the sec 4s already. Don't sad. -.- Then you all will have a long break. The longest one since I joined band when I was sec 1.

And there's one thing. I know the band is bigger now. But words go in from left ear and come out from right ear? Or go in from right ear and come out from left ear? Everyone so talkative. Talk and talk and talk. Talk never mind. Don't have to talk so loudly right. The band room also not very big. When you stand in there and listen. Like all the spoil radios operating together at the same time. Put yourself in your leaders' shoes. Think if you're in their position, what will you do and feel? When you reached the certain position, be it in band, or class, you'll realized how irritating it is.

And some of you guys complained that prac is tough. If this is tough, meaning the sec 3s and 4s went through hell la? If we managed to survive "hell", I don't see why now all of us can't go through "tough" together.

Gearing up for SYF - Uniform + Marching shoes

Dear all,

You should have already been informed by SLs.
Mon 22/2/10, ALL MUST report to band room promptly after school (Sec 1 and 2 - 1400, Upper Sec 1420 or 1530) for a quick check if you have uniform. Tailor is coming for the last time, to take measurements for 'special uniform' for colour guards. The seniors who indicated that you need to make another set of uniform can only do so, provided you have really tried to exchange uniform till you cant fit into any. I will check person by person if you really have the uniform and tick against a list.

Failure to do so will cause severe consequences:
1) Not enough money to make uniform for those who REALLY need.
2) Tailor cannot start making in time, and we will NOT have uniform in time for SYF.

Also, I have gotten vendor to send in sample sets of marching shoes. You will try and I will take down the size and order in bulk. I will try to check if all students can use edusave for this.

If we are going to do all these much later - tailor or vendor may not get things ready for us in time. Recall: 2 years ago, even when shoes were sent, there were also sizes problem and a lot of things need to be done even then.

After this stage of Uniform + Marching Shoes check, the next round will be checking of black socks and gloves. Some of you may think that you can buy at shops yourself. BUT trust me, NOT EVERYONE always does as told. If EVERYONE DOES AS TOLD ALWAYS, things will of course be so much easier. I seriously need ALL YOUR COOPERATION.

Especially for the big family of band - From Ms Neo HJFlight of Geese - Teamwork

This Fall when you see geese heading south for the winter flying along in V-formation, you might be interested in knowing that science has discovered why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own. (People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.)

Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag of resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front. (We should stay in formation with those who are going the same direction.) When the lead goose gets tired, he rotates back in the wind and another goose flies point. (It pays to take turns doing hard jobs - with people or with geese.) The geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.

Dear Band,

It is a hectic period of time, from now till Apr 10. Hang in there. I am impressed with your strong perserverance. I am touched to see our Sec 5s who decide to come back to assist, but definitely not at the expense of studies. I am happy to see that a large group of you chose to go to the library to study or finish your homework before Fri's practice. Make it a habit to spend any free time you have before band to revise your school work. We are a band which plays hard at the right time and works equally hard in studies and CCA.

So orientation over! Very good job everyone! Tiring isn't it. I fell asleep while doing homework. Poor me T_T -.- Ok, so our target was 60 for total. I collated all the names, cancel all the repeated names, and we have 75 sec 1s that signed up. :D But now, what we have to do this, get the sec1s to come for our prac, and make them stay! :D

Yesterday:
The new VP wanted us to move into the shade. So we moved in. And the SJAB was right beside us. Alot people. So some helped out at the booth, while some rehearsing for the performance, some enjoying air con in band room, some enjoying wind at foyer. So I was told a big group of band members went and supported our saxophonist! Good job saxophonist! Later Marcus hor. HAHA, I know you all know what I want to say. Right!! Not suan-ing Marcus now. :) Really. Good job everybody! And thank the supporters! Heard that once our saxophonist finished performing, then all of you left. Its shows how the band members support each other. Its like, the people I want to support finish performing, then I don't want to continue watching already. Some thing like that. I find it cool. ^^

And then the members playing the drums and stuff. Loud man! And then some was shouting "JOIN BAND JOIN BAND" LOL. Nice :D And after that, everything was great and easy. Packing up was fast. Band members are responsible :D We arranged the tables and benches properly ^^ But our shoes outside the band room is not properly arranged -.-

Thank you everyone! For the hardwork! For people who played the instruments, seniors that came back, teachers that helped, people that shouted, people that persuaded the sec 1s.

Motivation

Staying motivated is a struggle — our drive is constantly assaulted by negative thoughts and anxiety about the future. Everyone faces doubt and depression. What separates the highly successful is the ability to keep moving forward.

There is no simple solution for a lack of motivation. Even after beating it, the problem reappears at the first sign of failure. The key is understanding your thoughts and how they drive your emotions. By learning how to nurture motivating thoughts, neutralize negative ones, and focus on the task at hand, you can pull yourself out of a slump before it gains momentum.

Reasons We Lose Motivation

There are 3 primary reasons we lose motivation.

Lack of confidence – If you don’t believe you can succeed, what’s the point in trying?
Lack of focus – If you don’t know what you want, do you really want anything?
Lack of direction – If you don’t know what to do, how can you be motivated to do it?

How to Boost Confidence

The first motivation killer is a lack of confidence. When this happens to me, it’s usually because I’m focusing entirely on what I want and neglecting what I already have. When you only think about what you want, your mind creates explanations for why you aren’t getting it. This creates negative thoughts. Past failures, bad breaks, and personal weaknesses dominate your mind. You become jealous of your competitors and start making excuses for why you can’t succeed. In this state, you tend to make a bad impression, assume the worst about others, and lose self confidence.

The way to get out of this thought pattern is to focus on gratitude. Set aside time to focus on everything positive in your life. Make a mental list of your strengths, past successes, and current advantages. We tend to take our strengths for granted and dwell on our failures. By making an effort to feel grateful, you’ll realize how competent and successful you already are. This will rejuvenate your confidence and get you motivated to build on your current success.

It might sound strange that repeating things you already know can improve your mindset, but it’s amazingly effective. The mind distorts reality to confirm what it wants to believe. The more negatively you think, the more examples your mind will discover to confirm that belief. When you truly believe that you deserve success, your mind will generate ways to achieve it. The best way to bring success to yourself is to genuinely desire to create value for the rest of the world.

Developing Tangible Focus

The second motivation killer is a lack of focus. How often do you focus on what you don’t want, rather than on a concrete goal? We normally think in terms of fear. I’m afraid of being poor. I’m afraid no one will respect me. I’m afraid of being alone. The problem with this type of thinking is that fear alone isn’t actionable. Instead of doing something about our fear, it feeds on itself and drains our motivation.

If you’re caught up in fear based thinking, the first step is focusing that energy on a well defined goal. By defining a goal, you automatically define a set of actions. If you have a fear of poverty, create a plan to increase your income. It could be going back to school, obtaining a higher paying job, or developing a profitable website. The key is moving from an intangible desire to concrete, measurable steps.

By focusing your mind on a positive goal instead of an ambiguous fear, you put your brain to work. It instantly begins devising a plan for success. Instead of worrying about the future you start to do something about it. This is the first step in motivating yourself to take action. When know what you want, you become motivated to take action.

Developing Direction

The final piece in the motivational puzzle is direction. If focus means having an ultimate goal, direction is having a day-to-day strategy to achieve it. A lack of direction kills motivation because without an obvious next action we succumb to procrastination. An example of this is a person who wants to have a popular blog, but who spends more time reading posts about blogging than actually writing articles.

The key to finding direction is identifying the activities that lead to success. For every goal, there are activities that pay off and those that don’t. Make a list of all your activities and arrange them based on results. Then make a make an action plan that focuses on the activities that lead to big returns. To continue the example from above, a blogger’s list would look something like this:

Research relevant topics
Network with other bloggers
Optimize design and ad placements
Answer comments and email
Read other blogs

Keeping track of your most important tasks will direct your energy towards success. Without a constant reminder, it’s easy to waste entire days on filler activities like reading RSS feeds, email, and random web surfing.

When my motivation starts to wane, I regain direction by creating a plan that contains two positive actions. The first one should be a small task you’ve been meaning to do, while the second should be a long-term goal. I immediately do the smaller task. This creates positive momentum. After that I take the first step towards achieving the long-term goal. Doing this periodically is great for getting out of a slump, creating positive reinforcement, and getting long-term plans moving.

It’s inevitable that you’ll encounter periods of low energy, bad luck, and even the occasional failure. If you don’t discipline your mind, these minor speed bumps can turn into mental monsters. By being on guard against the top 3 motivation killers you can preserve your motivation and propel yourself to success.

We can make it. Gold/Silver/Bronze/COP, we'll all get it together as a band.

When its our turn to leave the band, what we'll have in our mind is just memories.

The fun time, the tears, the sweat, complains, sunburn, we'll never get it back when we leave the band.

Although its tiring, we're creating memories.

Memories that are created at this point of our lives are the purest.

The kind of friendship we have, is also the purest.

When we grow up and step into the society, we can never find this kind of friendship again.

So treasure the time we have now.

For the sec 1s, it will be your turn to lead the band for outdoor competition.

You can have another round of all these.

But what is different is you're leading the band next time, without your seniors to guide you anymore.

Treasure the time that you're having your seniors standing on the field with you.

Now, you're being motivated.

The next time, you'll be motivating others.

So don't give up. Till the end of the day, what we're doing now is just a small part of our lives that will always be kept in our hearts and be told to others when its their turn to go through this.

OK, sorry band members! Didnt update the blog yesterday! But I'm very glad that the majors didn't update the blog for nothing. Bcos there are people that come to the blog for information of the next band prac. Aww, so touched.

Today's attendance is bad bad bad. 35 members came only. I'm thankful to the 35 that came. Thanks for putting in the effort! You guys learn new song right? And we learn theory right? :)

As for the rest that didn't come for today's prac, you all have to learn everything again. And my dear SLs, teach them ok? Leaders! Let's work hard!

Attendance for band is from bad to WORST!!! Leader's i need you guys to do more job.. sorry if now i'm become fierce..because we do not have enough time..

HI band members! Im here to update this dead blog....!

So CT2 over, results are out. Remember to photocopy your result slips and pass it to your SL!
Fail/pass dont upset. Not getting the results you want? Work harder work harder work harder! Im not very pleased with my results either. So lets work harder tgt yeah? So at the end of the year, you wont regret. For sec 2s, to get in to the class you want next year, you have to study hard hor! No more slacking from now on!

Feel like studying, but lazy? I always feel like this. OK, but still, you have to be motivated to study! If not everyday stack stack stack abit, then the day before exam its so high, and everything just topple.

And attendance for band prac IS VERY BAD. Its like half of the band not here la. What, results bad an excuse to skip band? If you're studying, its different. But most of us will just skip band and then go out with your friends to play.

And im very disappointed with this particular member. HE promised his section to be present for band prac, and HE is very sorry for skipping band prac. So what now, still skip band like always and never keep the promise.

For me, i feel like this: If you cant keep to the promise you made, why bother promising? Someone force you? If you know you cant keep that promise dont care if others force you la. You're just making yourself and others suffering with all the lies.

So, the guy, if you're reading this, i hope you'll come for band prac. In the past, that particular section always have 100% full attendace. Yes, in the PAST.

As for those that want to quit band. Yes, you guys want to quit. So if you guys bring this attitude to society outside..... So when you have a project given by your boss and you find it hard and cant complete it. Are you gonna quit your work? So by one difficulties you guys quit and leave? No right?

Even if you want to quit, you should still come for band prac. When you go out and work, you want to quit you have to notify the company a few months before you can leave. So before the schl and teachers approve and allow you guys to leave band, you guys should still come for band prac.

Remember to bring your band files, pencil, instrument and mouthpiece (If you brought it home), your scores, and all other necessary stuffs that i missed. :D

Ok, im asked to blog long. Which i dun have a topic to blog about. Making me blog about leadership is kinda bored right..... Maybe i'll blog about Time. When im free. :D

This blog is SOOOOOOOOO DEAD, that i can't stand it. Argh! TAG ALRIGHT?! TAG MORE! You guys tag more, the majors update more. Fair? Yeah, very fair!

Actually i got nothing to post about. Someone told me that what parent stuff saying CCA will resume next week. I dunno what is that person telling me and also im not in school. So about when band prac is resuming, I'll inform all the SLs, then they will inform all of you ok.

And also, common test coming veryyyyyy sooooooooooonnnnnnnn. Study hard! Btw, is photocopying and handing your result slips over to your SLs THAT DIFFICULT?! Ok, nevermind. For common test 2 result slips, i'll give the job of reminding all of you to photocopy your result slips to your SLs. So if i didnt recieve the members' result slips, i'll chase after the SLs. Haha.

Lastly, take care of your health ok! You couldnt predict whether you'll fall sick tmr or not *touch wood* So, drink more water, rest well.

Hahaha, so how's the first week of school? Can change your body alarm clock back? Haha.

Tmr no schl. Youth day! We're all right? Should celebrate this day! Haha.

Ok, so maybe till week 3 or later wont have band prac. *AHHHH* I know you all will be sad.

But dun be so depressed that there's no band prac hor! Since no band prac, 3 weeks off, take this time to study, catch up with your schl work!

Set yourself target and goals for studies, band, friends, family and yourself! Make sure you achieve them!

Ok, to cheer up the depressed members, *haha* Here's a video. Which totally got nothing related to band. Some stuff to entertain you guys. Going to 2 mins part, damn funny. When i first saw it, i kept laughing. HAHA!

Hello band!!!
Here are some question and answer to ask your self...

Why should we have band?
- It is to bond with each other
- Get to know more friend
- To love and care about the band
- To make our school proud
- To compete with other school in SYF next year
- Have fun!!! at a right time.

What is the best things that compare to others Uniform Group?
- March
- Play Music
- March while playing Music
- Learn how to play instrument
- Can hold and play your own instrument
- Our band room got air-condition (hahax!)
- Having Fun but at the right time

Why do we do push up?
It is to train our arm muscle...

Why do you miss the band and boring if do not have band?
Because u love the band...tat is wat we want in the band..

How to PREVENT from being PUNISHED??...
1) Be PUNCTUAL - HOW? - Don't go home after school if got band. Bring your PE-shirt or Band T along...Then you wear your PE short inside... so that u just change your shirt..Or another way, RUN!!!

2) Check your own ATTIRE - Don't Forget..You guys always forget to: TAKE OUT YOUR WATCH, TUCK IN YOUR SHIRT, BAND FILE....the important ones larh..

3) When the TEACHER, LEADERS OR MR LIM is talking, DON'T TALK - Listen with your big ear open...

4) DON'T SLACK!!! - 9 to 10 more month to SYF.. You want to get what?? Gold? Silver? Bronze?... I hope u guy will think tat you want a GOLD... So start Working Hard to achieve what you want for the band. No one can help you if you, your own self do not want to help..... So please help the band n Mr Lim.. I do want you guys to regret in the future.

HI ALL! :) Hows schl today? Haha.

For this week, there will NOT be any band prac!

Its due to h1n1 and the school also announced something about CCA this morning.

So, dont come for band prac tmr. Otherwise you'll be the only person waiting there. haha.

Okkk, theres no Study Progammes too, Go home! And do your homework! If you haven finish your holiday homework, faster finish it up! Dont waste timee!

Schools to re-open as scheduled despite H1N1 situation

SINGAPORE: Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan has said schools will re-open and the Asian Youth Games and National Day celebrations will carry on.

But recently-returned students who have travelled to affected countries will stay at home for one week before joining their classmates when schools re-open on Monday.
